Among the interviewees, 65% women and 35% men, 95% improved their self-esteem and 88% are more vain.
These are some of the results of a scientific study released on Thursday (05), during the XVIII Brazilian Congress of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, which brings together until October 7 more than 1,600 surgeons and professionals who work in the treatment of obesity. The research was carried out between March and May 2017, with 201 patients operated for more than five years and in different regions of Brazil.
According to the president of the Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, Caetano Marchesini, obesity has become the acquired disease that most worries researchers in the world. “Over the last ten years, according to data from the Ministry of Health, obesity in Brazil has increased by 60% and bariatric surgery has proven its efficacy in remission of associated diseases and improved quality of life of patients operated on,” said Marchesini.
According to the bariatric surgeon responsible for the study, Luiz Vicente Berti, who is also executive vice president of the Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (SBCBM), the objective of the research was to evaluate the habits and attitudes of the patients and to understand the over the years.
Among the items evaluated in the research are the profile of patients operated on as age, sex, schooling and marital status, interviewee satisfaction after five years of surgery, postoperative surgery and weight gain, remission of associated diseases to obesity, health plan care, and the patient’s lifestyle before and after bariatric surgery.
According to Berti, the population is increasingly informed about obesity surgery for stomach reduction and the study has proven that. “About 83% claim to have knowledge of the surgical procedure. In 2007, this index reached 79%. In addition, 46% of the morbidly obese are pre-willing to perform the procedure, “said study author Luiz Vicente Berti.
Among the patients interviewed, 88% remained within the acceptable percentage of weight recovery and two-thirds are satisfied with their current weight. Another important point indicated by the research was that Diabetes ceased to exist for 68% of respondents.
HEALTHY HABITS – The practice of physical activities increased in 70% of the interviewees after bariatric surgery. Today, 66% of the operated ones feed in a healthier way than before the bariatric surgery.
Regarding food, 97% of patients ate fried foods and 58% stopped eating after surgery
“The prevailing foods in pre and post bariatric surgery were refined sugar, farinaceous and fat, which changed among 89% of respondents. Today, the operators eat more fruits, vegetables and vegetables, “reports Berti.
Regarding the consumption of alcoholic beverages, the study indicated that 60% consumed alcohol before surgery, in counterpart. “Contrary to what is thought, the study pointed out that after the procedure there was a reduction in drink consumption from 60% to 58%, and of these patients the vast majority reduced the amount consumed,” Berti said.
